The South Coast of Iceland is famous for its collection of untouched black sand beaches, shining like dark gems along the shore of the island country. Explore these beaches in the best way possible on this adrenaline-packed ATV quad biking tour. If you really want to get up close and personal with this unique part of Iceland, this is the best option out there.
This tour is perfect for those who crave action as well as for nature lovers. Take advantage of this chance to experience the breathtaking landscape of this area that was formed by the now-dormant volcano Katla. The volcano can currently be found hibernating under the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. The view along the coastline to Dyrhólaey with this majestic glacier in the background is sure to take your breath away, if the weather and visibility permits, of course.
You will depart from our base, which lies underneath Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Your experienced guide will provide you with all the gear needed for this adventure. The guide will also tell you about the all-terrain vehicles and give you a complete rundown of the safety instructions before you begin your ride. After everyone is ready to go, you’ll pass through some small rivers and streams en route to the first black sand beach.
After arriving on the luscious black sands of the first beach, you’ll have the space and opportunity to really see how fast these quad bikes can go. Iceland is known as the land of contrasts for good reason. Race along the beach with the Atlantic Ocean stretching out along one side and the cragged faces of the cliffs along the other, while the distant mountains crown the landscape. This is just one example of the unmistakable contrasts to be found along the South Coast.
During the ride along the beach, there will be time to stop at the famous DC-3 plane wreck. This landmark arrived in Iceland in 1973 when a US Navy plane was forced to crash land on the beach. Thankfully, there were no casualties, but the plane has remained on the beach ever since. From this vantage point, there is a spectacular view all along the black coast to Mýrdalsjökull glacier and Dyrhólaey, the southernmost point of the country. The tour will end where it began, at the base camp underneath Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
