Itinerary

Your local guide will meet you in Reykjavík, where you’ll be picked up in your own private SUV or Superjeep.

Hvalfjörður, translating to “whale fjord” in Icelandic, is the breathtaking centrepiece at the start of this tour. This serene fjord, a hidden gem away from the usual tourist trail, offers a tranquil escape into nature. The journey along Hvalfjörður is a peaceful one, where the quiet road meanders through stunning landscapes, making it an ideal route for those seeking solace and a chance to connect with Iceland’s untouched beauty.

Our next stop will be at Deildartunguhver. The 97°C (200°F) water that flows out of this natural hot spring is used to heat the towns of Borgarnes and Akranes. With 180 liters of water escaping every second (47.5 gallons per second), this spring has Europe’s highest flow.

Our exploration then takes us to Reykholt, a town that’s a treasure trove of history. This quaint settlement is not just a picturesque locale but also a cornerstone of Icelandic culture and lore, where the echoes of the past resonate through its ancient structures and the stories of historical figures who once walked its paths.

Nearby, we will visit the nearby waterfalls. Hraunfossar, whose name translates as “lava waterfalls”, makes this place truly one-of-a-kind and extraordinarily beautiful. This natural wonder is not just one solitary body of water like most waterfalls. Instead, it’s a collection of tiny streams that create countless tiny, white waterfalls. This water all falls down into Hvítá, the “white river” in Icelandic. While these falls are not robust and have no significant drop, they are beautiful. The contrast between the white water flowing out of the dark, solidified lava while surrounded by multi-coloured plants is wonderful. These wide, gentle falls are the perfect place for photographers to hone their skills.

Barnafoss the “children’s waterfall”, is the next stop on the tour. It earned its name, according to legend, after two children fell into the river and drowned, even though they were supposed to remain at home while their mother and father went to church. While this is not a happy story, the cascade is charming. The steep rocks are the product of thousands of years of volcanic eruptions, so watching the white water run over them is beautiful, not to mention hypnotizing.

Finally, we’ll arrive at Húsafell. This is the point from which all Langjökull glacier adventures originate. Depending on the weather conditions and the type of vehicle you’ve booked, we’ll go off-road to visit Langjokull Glacier and the Highland Road of Kaldidalur.

When booking, please remember that you will need a modified Superjeep to visit the glacier. Approaching the glacier by an SUV is not possible.

The additional options available during this tour include a snowmobiling trip, an ATV buggy ride, a visit to a man-made ice cave, horseback riding, and a lava cave tour.

Please note that this itinerary is subject to weather and the road conditions. If you choose to book the tour in winter, there are very limited daylight hours in Iceland, so some of the sights will have to be visited in dusk, or darkness, or skipped altogether. While we’ll try our best to avoid such occurrences, please be understanding if we are forced to make any alterations to the itinerary.
