Visit West Iceland with us on this private excursion. Explore the less-traveled areas of the region with its breathtaking cascades and fascinating hot springs. You’ll have the chance to ride across the top of Langjökull glacier as well as to see the largest glacier tunnel ever made for yourself – plus much more – all in one thrilling tour!
Your local guide will meet you in Reykjavík, where you’ll be picked up in your own private SUV or Superjeep.
Hvalfjörður, whose name in Icelandic means the “whale fjord”, is the stunning star of the beginning of this tour. If you want to get away from it all, the road along Hvalfjörður is absolutely ideal. Here you’ll have the opportunity to visit what is left of the former whaling stations as well as Glymur, Iceland’s second-tallest waterfall.
Our next stop will be at Deildartunguhver. The 97°C (200°F) water that flows out of this natural hot spring is used to heat the towns of Borgarnes and Akranes. With 180 liters of water escaping every second (47.5 gallons per second), this spring has the highest flow in all of Europe.
Here, if you wish, you can visit the recently opened Krauma Spa. The options available for relaxing geothermal bathing include various hot tubs, pools, and saunas along with a fabulous relaxation room. With the hypnotizing beauty of the Icelandic scenery in the background, this is a great way to unwind.
Once our visit to the geothermal area is complete, our next stop will be at Reykholt, a historical town, where we will be able to visit the nearby waterfalls. Hraunfossar, whose name translates as “lava waterfalls”, makes this place truly one-of-a-kind and extraordinarily beautiful. This natural wonder is not just one solitary body of water, like most waterfalls. Instead, it’s a collection of tiny streams that create countless tiny, white waterfalls. This water all falls down into Hvítá, the “white river” in Icelandic. While these falls are not powerful and have no great drop, they are beautiful. The contrast between the white water flowing out of the dark, solidified lava while surrounded by multi-colored plants is wonderous. These wide, gentle falls are the perfect place for photographers to hone their skills.
Barnafoss the “children’s waterfall”, is the next stop on the tour. It earned its name, according to legend, after two children fell into the river and drowned, even though they were supposed to remain at home while their mother and father went to church. While this is not a happy story, the cascade is really lovely. The steep rocks are the product of thousands of years of volcanic eruptions, so watching the white water run over them is quite beautiful, not to mention hypnotizing.
Finally, we’ll arrive at Húsafell. This is the point that all Langjökull glacier adventures leave from. Depending on the weather conditions and the type of vehicle you’ve booked, we’ll go off-road to pay a visit to Langjokull glacier and the Highland road of Kaldidalur.
Please keep in mind when booking that to visit the glacier, you will need a modified Superjeep. Approaching the glacier by an SUV is not possible.
The additional options available during this tour include a snowmobiling trip, an ATV buggy ride, a visit to a man-made ice cave, horseback riding, and a lava cave tour.
Please note that this itinerary is subject to both the weather and the road conditions. If you choose to book the tour in winter, there are very limited daylight hours in Iceland, so some of the sights will have to be visited in dusk, darkness, or skipped altogether. While we’ll try our best to avoid such occurrences, please be understanding if we are forced to make any alterations to the itinerary.
