During this Jökulsárlón private tour, you’ll be able to explore all that the South Coast of Iceland has to offer. You’ll travel from Seljalandsfoss to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and will be able to see and explore gorgeous waterfalls, impressive black sand beaches, majestic glaciers, mighty volcanoes, endless moss covered lava fields and much more.
For this glacier lagoon tour, you can expect a morning pickup from your accommodation in Reykjavík.
We’ll then head toward the first stop on the itinerary: Seljalandsfoss. This is one of the most visited waterfalls in Iceland and visitors can get up-close and personal. You’ll even get the chance to walk behind this magnificent waterfall to take pictures from there.
Once the first stop is complete, we’ll drive along the Ring Road, visiting the Skógafoss waterfall and heading in the direction of Hekla volcano. This is one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland today. It should come as no surprise that in the Middle Ages, this volcano was known as the “gateway to hell”.
But Hekla isn’t the only volcano that we’ll be able to spot from the Ring Road. The infamous Eyjafjallajökull will also be towering over us. You’ll probably remember its famous eruption of 2010, which severely disrupted and grounded air traffic all over Europe. Now you’ll get the chance to check it out yourself!
The next stop is Reynisfjara. This black sand beach is beautifully decorated by massive sea stacks and hexagonal basalt columns which are sure to impress. After our visit to the beach, we’ll head to the photogenic Vík í Myrdal. There, the sea rock formations, known as Reynisdrangar, are waiting for us to admire their beauty.
Continuing along the ever-changing South Coast, we’ll be able to admire green lava fields, barren deserts of black sand, impressive sea cliffs, and scenic glacial rivers. This will all happen while we are en route to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.
Jökulsárlón is one of the most beautiful sights that Iceland has to offer. In this lagoon, there are icebergs of all sizes, shapes, and colors floating on top of the water as they slowly work their way from the glacier that birthed them to the Atlantic Ocean. During this journey, some of the icebergs end up washed up on the shore where they lay scattered across the sand like shining jewels. This is why the beach is known as Diamond Beach.
While at the lagoon, you’ll be given time to explore. There is an optional boat tour available from May to October, when the weather permits. This option tour is not included in the price of the tour. After we have finished at the lagoon, we’ll get back in the vehicle for the drive back to Reykjavik.
Please note that this itinerary is subject to both the weather and the road conditions. If you choose to book the tour in winter, there are very limited daylight hours in Iceland, so some of the sights will have to be visited in dusk, darkness, or skipped altogether. While we’ll try our best to avoid such occurrences, please be understanding if we are forced to make any alterations to the itinerary.
