Explore the volcanic and geothermal activity that has shaped Iceland. This perfect activity day tour offers snorkeling in Lake Kleifarvatn, with its geothermal activity and the amazing landscape of Reykjanes peninsula. You’ll witness something you rarely see during a regular snorkeling tour in the tropics: active underwater hot springs! You don’t have to be experienced snorkeler to enjoy this unique experience. Our experienced and certified guides will lead you and take pictures of the snorkeling trip.
We will start our day at Seltún Geothermal Area car parking lot.
The location of Lake Kleifarvatn is just a short drive from Reykjavík (30 min drive), but it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere. Your guide will drive around the lake to found a nice spot on the beach. Because of the cold water, you will wear warm drysuit for snorkeling. Our guides will help you to gear up properly and they will give you training on how to use the gear properly and what will happen during the tour. They will give you a lot of interesting and detailed information about Kleifarvatn and the area.
In the water, your guide will constantly be swimming around you silently, taking some photos and make sure that you feel safe and enjoy the tour.
The visibility will be great and as soon as you swim 10-20 meters off the shore, you will see the amazing underwater world with many bubbling hot springs surrounded by colorful sulfide deposits. However, the lake could seem smooth and still, everything will be streaming under the water. We’ve heard this sensation described as similar to ‘snorkeling in a glass of Champagne’—the fact that you are snorkeling in a caldera is also impressive enough!
After the snorkeling, we will enjoy some hot chocolate, cookies, and traditional Icelandic snacks before moving on to Seltún geothermal area. Seltún is a fascinating hot spring field, recognizable by the boiling mud pools and steaming ground. Through the steam, you’ll see yellow, red and green colors, as well as the blue and white colors of the sulfite deposits. The sulfates dissolve in water and when it rains they disappear altogether, leaving the bright colors of the sulfur.
After the exciting hours of exploring the great wonders of the Kleifarvatn and Seltún area, we will make our way back to the car parking lot. We highly recommend that bring your swimsuit with you. Your next stop after this tour could be the nearby Blue Lagoon where you can relax in the hot geothermal seawater and enjoy some tranquility.

Seltún Geothermal Area parking lot
Our day tours are very popular and we have many days when all the available seats are booked out. Please book your tour early to avoid disappointment. You can book this tour online using the booking form or just call our office. We typically respond to phone calls from 8:00 AM to 17:00 PM GMT – if you do not reach us, please send an email and we will reply to your message as soon as possible.
All prices are per person. We accept payment by major credit and debit cards with no additional fees. Gratuities are not included.
At all times your safety is our first priority. You can expect any kind of weather in Iceland. For this reason, the tour itinerary may be subject to change the sights without notice or the tour might be canceled due to weather, or other unforeseen circumstances. If the timing changes, we will need your valid mobile phone number to contact you and inform you of the time change. Please don’t forget to fill out your phone number on the booking form. If the tour is canceled, you can choose to receive a full refund or to reschedule your tour for another day. We make every effort to avoid any such changes wherever possible.
Since the weather is unpredictable, always bring comfortable outdoor clothes. Since the water temperature is cold, please bring warm and long underwear layers and warm socks. Jeans are not suitable clothing; a waterproof jacket and shoes and a warm sweater are highly recommended. It’s best to wear waterproof boots. Bring contact lenses if you wear glasses and your personal daily medications if required.
Participants must have read, signed and followed directions on the online Snorkeling Medical Statement (link will also be provided in the confirmation email).
Please have our Snorkeling Medical form signed off by a doctor if you are age 60 or older.
All participants must be at minimum 150cm / maximum 200cm and minimum 45kg / maximum 120kg. Please check our dry suit size chart and make sure that you fit within our snorkeling suits.
Be at least 14 years of age on the year, be physically fit and be comfortable in the water and be able to swim.
All participants must be able to communicate in English.
Persons with recent surgery, or who are pregnant are not recommended to participate in the snorkeling tours. Please let us know of any allergies or medical conditions that you may require assistance with.
Full payment is required at time of booking to secure your place. We require 24 hrs notice of cancellation for a refund. Any cancellation made within less than 24 hours prior to departure will be fully charged.
