The pool was constructed in 1891 and is officially the oldest swimming pool in the country. Icelanders call it ‘the old pool’ or ‘gamla laugin’. In the year 1909, the first swimming lessons took place in the pool, which continued until it relocated to the new pool in Flúðir in 1947. After this, the Secret Lagoon was forgotten for decades. Once its ownership changed hands, however, it underwent a renaissance. It has since been thoroughly renovated, although it maintains a natural charm and an air of rustic, fairytale mystery.
Spend time in this relaxing setting feeling your worries slip away. A natural hot spring feeds the lagoon with 38-39°C water that bubbles up from deep within the earth at a rate of 10 liters per second, constantly replenishing itself so that there is a steady supply of fresh, clean water in the pool at any given time, letting you rest as long as you need. The area around the hot spring consists of mossy lava fields and geothermal hot spots, including a small geyser that erupts every 5 minutes or so, which can be seen from the pool. A path by the pool allows you to explore this area with ease. The steam that rises from the surrounding terrain gives the place its distinct and magical atmosphere.
Enjoy brand-new facilities at the Secret Lagoon, including changing rooms, showers, restrooms, a bar, and a bistro area. Situated in a remote location in Fluðir, the Secret Lagoon is just an hour away from Geysir, 1 hour and 20 minutes from Reykjavik, and 2 hours from Vik, making it a great destination on your trip to Iceland.
