Geosea is not only a world-class geothermal bathing mecca — it is an experience that taps into the historical roots of a small fishing town in North Iceland that has harnessed the earth's geothermal waters for centuries. It is a rare union of mineral-rich seawater and heat from the Earth's core. Perched along a western-facing cliffside that overlooks the Skjálfandi Bay and the Arctic Circle to the north, our baths provide the ultimate vantage point for whale watchers and those seeking the northern lights. Reconnect, decompress, and uniquely enjoy Icelandic nature at Geosea.
For centuries, the geothermal heat north of Húsavík has been known to residents, who have utilized it for bathing and washing. Drilling for hot water at Húsavíkurhöfði in the mid-20th century revealed water that turned out to be hot seawater, too rich in minerals to be suitable for heating houses.
Instead of letting this hot water go to waste, an old cheese barrel was installed at Húsavíkurhöfði. There, Húsavík residents could enjoy the health benefits of bathing in hot seawater. Those suffering from skin conditions such as psoriasis have found relief by bathing in the water, which is at an optimal temperature of 38°-39°C.
The water in the GeoSea sea baths comes from two drill holes, one located by the cheese barrel and the other by Húsavík harbor. There is no need to use any cleaning agents or equipment, as the steady flow of water from the drill holes, between the pools, over their edges, and into the sea ensures that the water stays within limits stipulated by health regulations.
Head up to Husavik to visit the beautiful GeoSea Geothermal Baths. Step into the warm, mineral-rich seawater heated by the Earth’s core. As you float in the baths, perched on a cliffside overlooking Skjálfandi Bay and the Arctic Circle, keep an eye out for whales and the iconic Northern Lights.
Chat with locals and tourists alike as the 38-39°C water relaxes your muscles, stimulates circulation within the body, and rejuvenates your skin. Take a break from the water to visit the steam room to alleviate stress and calm the senses.
Swim up to the bar and treat yourself to a refreshing soft drink or an alcoholic beverage while floating and enjoying the view. Before leaving, wash off in the showers with the provided shower gel, shampoo, and hair conditioner from the Icelandic natural skincare company, Sóley Organics.
