Did you know that you can see the giants of the ocean along with the most adorable bird in the world in one single boat trip? This unbelievable tour in the whale-watching capital of Europe is one that every wildlife lover should join.
The charismatic town of Húsavík is the starting point for this adventure. It is there that your boat will be waiting for you in the harbor of this northern town. This small rigid inflatable boat is closer to the water than the larger whale-watching vessels. It also has fewer seats, so that this will be a much more intimate experience for all involved.
Once everyone has been dressed in overalls and lifejackets, you’ll board the vessel and start your journey in Skjálfandi Bay. Within no time, the mammals which fill these Arctic waters will begin to make themselves seen.
Humpback whales and white-beaked dolphins are the stars of the show here, coming to the surface to perform and do acrobatic stunts for onlookers. They are also the most common species seen in the bay. Minke whales and harbor porpoises are slightly less common but also very charming, if less lively.
Húsavík is known as the whale-watching capital of Europe because of the diverse number of mammals you can find in the area. Not only the previously mentioned species, but blue whales, fin whales, pilot whales, beaked whales, and orcas also call these waters home.
Apart from the whales, during the puffin season, which lasts from April 15 to August 20, puffins can be seen flying wildly overhead, diving into the water in the search for fish, or relaxing happily on the surface of the water. As the boat is smaller than other vessels, it’s the appropriate size to approach the islands with puffin nests to allow you to see the cute birds protecting their burrows.
The islands are beautiful and dramatic as is the surrounding landscape. Whenever there are no animals around to draw your attention, you can be sure that the breathtaking views will do so instead.
After the tour has finished and you’ve definitely had your fill of marine life, the boat will return to Húsavík harbor.
