This exciting Golden Circle Super Jeep tour from Reykjavík offers great fun and spectacular views. It gives you the opportunity to travel across the Thingvellir National park, see the stunning Geyser Geothermal area, visit the unique and awe-inspiring Gullfoss waterfall. As a highlight, you will discover a magnificent man-made ice cave, where you can admire the 400 years old ice and you can see the layers of ash from many different eruptions throughout history.
Pickup in Reykjavík
You will start the tour early: we will collect you from your chosen pick up location in Reykjavik between 8:00 and 8:30. (Please be aware that pickup process can take up to 30 minutes, depending on the traffic and where you are staying).
It is a clever idea to pack some lunch for the day, and light snacks to have in the truck. We will not have a lot of time for a lunch stop along the way, but it will be possible to purchase some lunch at one of our stops.
Visiting Geysir Geothermal Area
We will use the darkness in the morning and drive to the southeast across the Hellisheidi lava plateau and take the scenic journey to our first stop, a mighty geothermal area. It has a few bubbling mud pits and exploding geysers. Strokkur, that is the most active geyser in Iceland and erupts naturally every 4-10 minutes sending the hot water 15-20 meters high up in the air. Today, the other geyser called Great Geysir’s activity is very low but who knows, it might wake up again someday after a good earthquake and maybe you’ll get to witness it!
After visiting the hot spring area, we will travel on to Gullfoss, one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland offering a spectacular view of the forces and beauty of untouched nature. The wide Hvítá river rushes southward, and about a kilometer above the falls it turns sharply to the right and flows down into a wide curved three-step “staircase” and then abruptly plunges into the river below.
As one first approach the falls, the edge is obscured from view, so that it appears that the river simply vanishes into the earth. As you make your way down the path to the waterfall you can hear the phenomenal sound of the rushing water cascading down in vast volumes to the depths of the river below. In cooler months the spray from the water freezes and creates a beautiful white blanket on the sides of the falls, while the surrounding greenery turns a golden yellow and gives the waterfall a brooding feel.
Riding on Iceland’s second largest glacier
Now it is time to put the Super Jeep to the test and show you what it is all about! We switch the jeep into low gear, let some air out of the tires to give you a smoother ride, and then we are on our way to our snowmobile base camp at Langjökull Glacier. Sometimes conditions can be quite difficult, making the trip up to the glacier cave a long and slow one. Possibly we will not even make it all the way, but then we will do our best to make it up to you with a small surprise! We might get stuck in the snow at some point, but then the driver will have to pull some tricks out of their bag to get the car free. Other times, it may be smooth sailing the whole way and we can use our time to play around more!
Exploring a man-made ice cave
The newly built glacier ice cave lies on the edge of the glacier and is quite the magnificent sight to see. The cave is lit up with strategically placed lights, so you get to fully enjoy the beauty of the cave, whether it is rain or shine outside. You’ll get enough time to explore and photograph the cave and to enjoy the stunning crystalline blue beauty of this amazing ice cavern.
Thingvellir National Park
After some time in the cave, we will take the scenic drive towards Reykjavik. If time and daylight allow us we will make a quick stop at the Thingvellir National Park. It is a UNESCO world heritage site plus, one of the few places in the world the tectonic plates and the rifts between them are visible to us.
Drop-off in Reykjavík
At the end of your spectacular adventure, tired but incredibly satisfied, we will return to Reykjavík, dropping you off where we picked you up.
