In sun or snow, the tour will begin in the village of Reykjahlíð, near Lake Mývatn. Your guides will be waiting for you there, along with your off-road fat bikes. These bicycles are the best for the changeable terrain in Iceland and are able to handle whatever the north throws at them. Lava fields, hills, craters, snow – all of this can be found in the Mývatn area.

Your guide for this tour will be an expert biker and knowledgeable local who will be able to tell you all about the things you are going to see during your trip. They will fill you in on the folklore, geography, and history of this stunning area. The route for the day as well as the sights you will see depend on the season and weather conditions during your visit. This is because certain areas are only accessible and enjoyable in certain seasons.

One of the potential landmarks is the dramatic Dimmuborgir lava field, whose name translates as the “dark fortress”. You may feel as if you have left the planet and stepped onto the surface of Mars if you get the chance to visit Skútustaðír, a collection rare pseudo-craters. Fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones might recognize Grótagjá, a hot-spring cave which was used in the filming of the series.

No matter where you stop, any visit to Mývatn is sure to entrance you with its beautiful views of the lake, craters, lava fields, and mountains along with the enchanting plants and wildlife in the region.

You will have two hours to ride your fat bike over rarely-used trails and paths to gaze upon the marvelous scenery. There will, of course, be plenty of opportunities for photos. At the end of the tour, you will return with your bike to base camp. Then you will bid your guide adieu before continuing your exploration of North Iceland.
