Tour itinerary

The tour will begin in the parking lot at Sólheimajökull glacier. Here, you’ll meet your experienced local guide who will start out by introducing you to the area. You’ll be provided with all of the safety gear you may need on this trip, including crampons and an ice axe. As well as teaching you about the environment, your guide will also teach you how to use this equipment. This ensures that everyone will be safe and that no experience is necessary to join this tour.

Sólheimajökull is an outlet of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Mýrdalsjökull itself lies directly on top of Mt. Katla, the most powerful volcano in the country. The infamous Eyjafjallajökull glacier volcano lies just to the west of here. You may remember the name Eyjafjallajökull from when its 2010 eruption affected air traffic all over Europe and made international news.

After a 15-minute walk to the glacier, you’ll pick up your gear and start your ascent up the glacier. The first peaks will be covered in ash, a remnant from the eruptions of nearby volcanoes. Once you reach the pearly white surface of the glacier itself, you’ll be able to experience for yourself the wide range of colors hidden within the ice sheet. Electric blue, pure white, and jet black ice all come together in one beautiful, ancient whole.

Peer down into bottomless crevasses. Gaze at the endless panorama made by the surrounding mountains and valleys. Wonder at the sheer mass of the endless ice below your feet. Feel the freedom of being alone in the silence: just you, the glacier, and the sound of your crampons marching across the ice. This is not an experience you want to miss out on.
