Apr. – Oct.
This adventurous half-day tour will take you onto the surface of a glacier where you’ll be able to get up close and personal with an Icelandic ice cap in person. This visit is not to just any glacier, but to an outlet of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier on the European continent. Scale its frozen surface and cross glacier hiking off your Iceland must-do list all in one spectacular trip.

The tour will begin at the Freysnes gas station in Southeast Iceland. Here, just outside the Skaftafell Nature Reserve, you’ll meet your guide and the rest of your tour group. At this easy-to-find location, you’ll climb on board your modified Superjeep and drive into Vatnajökull National Park.
If all goes according to plan, after about a 15-minute drive, you’ll arrive up at Falljökull, whose name translates as the “falling glacier”. The location of the hike depends on the conditions on the day of the tour, of course. Falljökull is less explored than the other Vatnajökull glacier tongues in the region. This means that your experience can be more personalized with less interference from other tour groups.
At the base, you’ll be equipped with crampons, a helmet, and an ice axe. These tools will help you and keep you safe on this adventure. After a safety briefing, your guide will lead you out to meet this magnificent glacier.
To complete this tour, you’ll need to be at a moderate level of fitness, as Falljökull is a bit more challenging to climb than some of its neighbors. But, after beginning, it will shortly become clear why glacier hiking is one of the most popular activities in Iceland. The views from up above are nothing short of dazzling, offering full vistas over Vatnajökull National Park and the South Coast of Iceland. Add to that the seemingly endless sheet of white and blue ice as far as the eye can see and the remarkable crevasses and caverns within the glacier itself, and you’ll find yourself in a completely different world, like none other on Earth.
This half-day tour lasts just over three hours. That will afford you all of the time you need to take in the views along with as many pictures as you see fit. Your guide will be able to teach you all about glaciers while leading you along, including how they formed, how they have changed over the years, and how the modern area is threatening their existence.
Once the adventure has ended, you’ll head back to your Superjeep, which will drive you back to the gas station where you started. Here you can pick up your own vehicle and head off for your next Icelandic adventure.
