Itinerary

The Fimmvörðuháls Trail runs between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers in South Iceland, passing through the verdant valley of Thórsmörk, whose name means the “Valley of Thor”. This is one of the most popular mountain trails in the country. For 13.6 mi. (22 km), Fimmvörðuháls winds past a number of marvellous landscapes that are better seen than described. A range of different landscapes will open before your eyes on the trail. This is why Iceland has been called the “Land of Fire and Ice”, full of contrasts, as the forces of glaciers and volcanoes forged it.

Plan for an early morning start to make the most of the day. Don’t assume that this trail is easy. It will be challenging, strenuous, and thrilling. There will be a change in altitude of 3280 ft. (1000 m), which can be quite a climb for those not used to hiking.

The meeting point is at Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. Fimmvörduháls trail will take you up through “Waterfall Way”, where 26 waterfalls await you, up to the site of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption that made the news as the volcanic eruption shut down air traffic in Europe for a couple of days. This world-famous trail also passes through a harsh mountain pass, deep canyons, and the sumptuous Thórsmörk valley.

It can be overwhelming to stand in front of that superb landscape and witness the strength, beauty, and variety of nature lying naked before you, but it is also completely invigorating. The sensation of achievement at the end of the trail can’t be underestimated! Don’t pass up this chance to climb into the clouds and see firsthand some of the most gorgeous views that South Iceland has to offer. Check for tour availability by choosing a date. We would love to have this adventure with you.
