See one of the worlds most beautiful hot spring areas, hidden in the Icelandic highlands. Become acquainted with local cuisine and legends, bathe in hot pools and enjoy the magical atmosphere created by the moon, stars and possibly the northern lights.
We pick you up at your accommodation in Reykjavik and head towards north Iceland. We will make various stops on the way; enjoy Hraunfossar falls, hike to Grabrok crater and stop at Europe’s most powerful hot spring, Deildartunguhver. Destination for the day: Afangi hut.
Today we plan to drive only 40 km, but this can in fact be quite challenging in winter time. The super jeeps will need all their power today and the guide all their experience! Keep your eyes open at all times, not only for the beautiful scenery, but as well for the possibility to spot an arctic fox! Destination for the day: highland geothermal area at Hveravellir.
In the morning time, you can take a walk between the several hot pools and hot springs at Hveravellir, such as Blahver and Oskurholshver (Shrieking Mound). After breakfast we walk to see the highland hideaway of the outlaws, who used Hveravellir as a hiding spot centuries ago. In the evening, after dinner, we will spend some time together by candle light and the guides will tell you stories about outlaws, elves and trolls living in the Icelandic highlands.
Unfortunately we will have to leave this magical place and look for civilization again. Once we are out of the highland terrain, the amazing waterfall Gullfoss will appear in front of us. On a beautiful day the water flowing down the glacier river Hvita and into Gullfoss appears as golden, hence the name “The Golden waterfall”. The Golden waterfall is fed by Langjokull glacier which we have driven next to for almost a 100 km.
We will spend our last night close to Geysir area, which is a special scene with tons of geothermal power under the ground. The original geyser, which has given its name to all other geysers, is not active anymore, but the little brother Strokkur erupts every 5-7 minutes and can release hot water up to 40 meters (130 feet)!
After a delicious breakfast it is time to head back to Reykjavik. We will make our last stop in Thingvellir National Park, known for its rich history and geological splendor. We will walk in this valley and see how the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart. In the distance you will see the beautiful waterfall Oxararfoss. We will then drive you back to your accommodation in Reykjavik.
